“Virtual coffee” from the UBA Committee: what a legal advisor should be like for business?
On March 5, the UBA International Law Committee held an online discussion in the format of “virtual coffee” on the topic: “What does business expect from legal counsel today?”.
The meeting was moderated by:
- Olga Kuchmienko, Chairman of the UBA International Law Committee, attorney at law, Ph.
- Victoria Ivasechko, Member of the Board of the UBA International Law Committee, Counsel at Redcliffe Partners.
During the discussion, lawyers and business representatives shared their views on the current challenges of the legal profession. Business expects legal advisors to have not only a deep knowledge of law, but also strategic thinking, responsiveness, and understanding of technological changes. Participants discussed the transformation of the role of a lawyer, including the impact of war, the development of artificial intelligence, and changes in the international legal environment.
The key issues discussed by the experts included
- monitoring changes in legislation;
- work with contractors;
- notification of force majeure circumstances;
- restructuring of contract enforcement mechanisms;
- change of approaches to the selection of counterparties (monitoring of sanctions and connections);
- dispute resolution;
- adaptation to changes in business conditions
Such informal meetings are part of the UBA International Law Committee's initiatives aimed at supporting Ukrainian lawyers and businesses in the international context. The participants highly appreciated the opportunity to communicate professionally and get answers to important questions related to international business and legal practices.
