Meeting of the UBAHRI’s Supervisory Board: new Chair elected and report on current activities presented
On Wednesday, February 26, the second meeting of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (UBA HRI) took place.
During the meeting, a new Chair of the Supervisory Board was elected — Anna Ogrenchuk, who served as President of the UBA from 2021 to 2023 and is the Managing Partner at LCF Law Group.
The Board members also heard a report on the current activities of the Institute. Ongoing projects include capacity-building for Ukrainian lawyers through international human rights protection mechanisms, transitional justice implementation in Ukraine, the ACT — Addressing Corruption Together Project, support for war crimes victims, and war crimes trial monitoring, phase 3 (the implementation of which has been temporarily paused). The Institute received initial funding of $25,000 from the International Bar Association (IBA) for this year’s initiatives.
Additionally, recently, the UBA HRI, in collaboration with the IBA Human Rights Institute, submitted a report to the UN Special Rapporteur on Transitional Justice regarding violations of economic, social, and cultural rights in the context of the war and transitional justice in Ukraine.
The members of the Supervisory Board were also introduced to the Institute’s plans for 2025, including:
- A mentoring program for judges, prosecutors, and lawyers handling war crimes cases (in partnership with IBA), gender analysis of court decisions, an awareness campaign on the importance of ensuring the right to a fair trial in war crimes cases;
- Development of a proposal of a project on humanitarian support to Ukrainian population in a consortium led by the International Rescue Committee;
- Developing objectives and activities withing a joint project with Raoul Wallenberg Institute funded by the Swedish Institute (boosting capacity of human rights stakeholders in Ukraine).
The UBA Human Rights Institute continues its vital work, contributing to the development of human rights activities in Ukraine and supporting international initiatives aimed at ensuring human rights during the war and in post-war recovery.
