The Human Rights Institute has been established within the UBA

By the decision of the Board of the Ukrainian Bar Association, a new subdivision, Human Rights Institute, has been established within the UBA.

The purpose of the newly created Institute is:

  • support the legal profession in ensuring human rights and the rule of law;
  • resistance to Russian aggression against Ukraine;
  • advocating for the independence of the legal professions;
  • responding to global challenges to the rule of law and human rights.

The UBA Human Rights Institute will fulfill the following tasks:

  • promote the rule of law and human rights in Ukraine by amending legislation, conducting research and analysis, and providing trainings and other educational activities for lawyers;
  • promote compliance of Ukrainian legislation and practice with international obligations;
  • improve the knowledge and skills of lawyers in different regions of Ukraine on the rule of law and human rights protection;
  • draw attention to cases of human rights violations and interference with the independence of the profession.

The Institute of Human Rights of the Ukrainian Bar Association will:

  • support Ukrainian lawyers in better protecting human rights and the rule of law and ensuring the independence of the profession;
  • assist the judicial, law enforcement and other authorities of Ukraine in improving the legal framework, administrative and judicial practice in order to provide effective justice services to the society;
  • contribute to an effective, transparent and professional justice system, which in turn will contribute to better protection of human rights and the rule of law in Ukraine.

The Institute's team will consist of a director, a project manager, and a project assistant. The Supervisory Board of the Institute will also be formed and will include 7 legal professionals from among national and international experts.
