Zoia Zahynei-Zabolotenko Participated in the Conference on Investigating International Crimes in The Hague

On November 19-20, 2024, the conference "Strengthening Ukraine’s Efforts in Investigating, Prosecuting, Adjudicating, and Reporting on International Crimes" took place in The Hague, Netherlands. The event brought together international experts, government representatives, and civil society organizations to discuss progress and challenges in the prosecution of war crimes.

Zoia Zahynei-Zabolotenko, a national expert for the Ukrainian Bar Association (UBA) project "The Trial Monitoring in War Crimes Cases", contributed as a panelist in a discussion on monitoring compliance with fair trial standards during national-level proceedings.

In her presentation, she shared key findings from the monitoring activities, focusing on:

  • the quality of judgments in cases under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine;
  • procedural challenges in "in absentia" criminal trials;
  • ethical considerations for lawyers participating in cases under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The expert also outlined potential solutions to address these issues, which would enhance the effectiveness of adjudicating war crimes cases in Ukraine.
