Lawyers discussed legal challenges and solutions in the process of compensating Ukraine for war damages
Compensating Ukraine for war damages is a long-term process that will take considerable time. However, Ukrainian and international experts are already seeking legal solutions to make compensation feasible. Ukrainian legal professionals discussed the challenges associated with this process during the event "Compensating Ukraine for War Damages: Legal Challenges and Solutions."
The event took place on June 12, ahead of the G7 summit. It was organized by the Dnistrianskyi Center in cooperation with the Ukrainian Bar Association with support from the International Renaissance Foundation.
"As the Ukrainian Bar Association, we raise the issue of compensation for damages on various platforms. Therefore, this event continues a series of discussions we have been holding in Ukraine, Europe, and America. The issue of compensation is extremely important, complex, and ambiguous, so it will be interesting for us as lawyers to have a discussion, hear the speakers, and exchange ideas," noted Mykola Stetsenko, President of the UBA, while opening the event.
The discussion covered various aspects of compensating Ukraine for damages.
"This is a very comprehensive event because it includes representatives of civil society, practitioners, government agencies, and the Register of Damage. We decided to hold it in a smaller format to discuss the issues from different perspectives," emphasized Ivan Horodyskyy, Vice President of the UBA, Director of the Dnistrianskyi Center.
During the event, participants discussed topics such as the creation of international mechanisms for compensation and confiscation of Russian assets abroad, the right of victims of aggression to compensation and the accessibility of mechanisms for its implementation, the effectiveness of state policy in the context of Ukraine's confiscation mechanism, and the practice of the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC).
"The issue of compensation with a focus on victims is in the spotlight. It is important to build a community around this issue because it cannot be resolved bureaucratically. There are many factors that affect the effectiveness of decisions and their feasibility, and in this sense, such discussions are an attempt to understand the realistic ways to achieve goals, how accurately we define them, what roles exist today, and how they are implemented. Our discussion will lead us to a better understanding of the situation and form a bank of ideas that can move us forward," emphasized Roman Romanov, Director of the Human Rights and Justice Program of the International Renaissance Foundation.
