Serhiy Holovatyi inspires students with insights on Ukrainian legal terminology
On December 20, 2024, the UBA Students' League organized a unique event that brought together legal professionals, educators, students, and all those passionate about the development of Ukrainian legal language. The event was held in a hybrid format: in person at the Ukrainian Bar Association office and online, enabling a wide audience from across the country to participate.
"Incorrect or outdated terminology can lead to legal errors, misunderstandings, or even legal conflicts. This event emphasizes the need to refine Ukrainian legal vocabulary, cleanse it of outdated concepts, and adapt it to the realities of the modern world," the organizers noted.
The keynote speaker was Serhiy Holovatyi, a distinguished Ukrainian lawyer, politician, former judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (2018-2024), and Acting Chair of the CCU (2020-2024).
Mr. Holovatyi is the author of the seminal work ‘On Legal Language: Studies, Collections, Dictionaries, Documents’, a pivotal contribution to the development of Ukrainian legal terminology. Special attention during the event was given to this book, which serves as a vital resource for many legal professionals and linguists by providing an in-depth analysis of the evolution of legal terms.
Both in-person and online participants had the opportunity to ask questions, share their thoughts, and engage in a lively discussion. Attendees praised the event's high level of organization, the relevance of the topic, and the uniqueness of Mr. Holovatyi’s presentation. Many remarked that such discussions inspire further research into legal language and its impact on justice.
The UBA Students' League extends its heartfelt gratitude to Serhiy Holovatyi for sharing his extensive experience, profound knowledge, and groundbreaking contributions. Special thanks also go to the participants, as only through collective efforts can Ukrainian legal terminology become more modern, precise, and comprehensible!
