AUK Talks with Eugene R. Sullivan. Military justice system
American University Kyiv (AUK) invites to AUK Talks #20 with Eugene R. Sullivan, Former Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.
Eugene R. Sullivan is a retired Federal Judge in Washington D.C. with over 16 years of appellate court judicial experience. Nominated by President Reagan and confirmed by the Senate, Judge Sullivan was installed as a Federal Judge in 1986. In 1990, President Bush named him the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals (AF). In 2002, he was elevated to a Senior Status Federal Judge. When not recalled to active Court service, Judge Sullivan is the Senior Counsel of the D.C. Law firm of Freeh Sporkin & Sullivan LLP.
Judge Sullivan served in the White House on the legal defense team of President Nixon during the Watergate investigation in 1974. From 1974 to 1982, he was a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. Later Judge Sullivan
served in the Pentagon for almost five years as the 14th U.S. Air Force General Counsel and the Chief Ethics Officer of the U.S. Air Force after serving initially as the U.S.AF Deputy General Counsel. In addition for almost 5 years, Judge Sullivan was the covert General Counsel of the National Reconnaissance Office (“NRO”-a then super-secret US satellite intelligence agency).
During AUK Talks Eugene R. Sullivan will talk on such issues as:
- the influence of military justice on national security;
- how the system of Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) functions in the United States;
- is it necessary to restore the military justice system in Ukraine now?
- what model of courts-martial can be useful and appropriate for Ukraine?
