Inna Liniova participated in a seminar on accountability for crimes against Ukraine held in Geneva
Inna Liniova, International Operations Advisor of the Ukrainian Bar Association, participated in the seminar "Avenues of Accountability for Ukraine," which took place on February 21 in Geneva, Switzerland. The event was organized by the permanent missions of Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands to the United Nations office in Geneva.
The aim of the event was to raise awareness within the international community about the available avenues for holding Russia accountable for its armed aggression against Ukraine. Special attention was given to the role that the UN Human Rights Council can play in ensuring that perpetrators of human rights violations and war crimes are held to account. Seminar participants also discussed specific challenges while seeking accountability for crimes and violations against children in the context of Russia's ongoing full-scale war.
Inna Liniova was among the experts at the "Accountability Tracks" session, where existing avenues for accountability were discussed. Panelists delved into how these tracks interact and can reinforce each other at the international (ICC, ICJ, CoI), national (universal jurisdiction), and domestic levels.
In her presentation, Ms. Liniova touched upon the topic of establishing the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. She emphasized that the ideal model would be the UN-supported Tribunal. At the same time, she noted that a more realistic approach would be the creation of an international tribunal through an agreement between Ukraine and other countries.
The UBA’s International Operations Advisor underscored the Association's call for G7 countries to facilitate the establishment of the Tribunal in the first half of 2024, as it is an urgent matter. Additionally, Inna Liniova reminded that the UBA urged the G7 to initiate a review of the Rome Statute to streamline the procedure for considering all international crimes.
