Academics and legal educators discussed dissertation writing practices in the field of law

On April 16, 2025, the Scholars and Educators Section of the Ukrainian Bar Association (UBA) held an online event titled “Preparing a Dissertation: Strategies and Insights for Legal Scholars.” The event brought together a diverse audience, including researchers, postgraduate students, university lecturers, doctoral candidates, and legal professionals considering a transition into academia. The primary objective of the event was to highlight current issues in the preparation of legal dissertations, discuss modern challenges in academic research, and provide practical recommendations for early-career researchers.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Iryna Hlovyuk, Doctor of Laws, Professor, Attorney at law, member of the Scientific and Advisory Board of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, and Professor at the Department of Criminal Law Disciplines at Lviv State University of Internal Affairs. In her presentation, she emphasized the importance of a thoughtful approach to selecting a dissertation topic, the ability to assess its long-term relevance, and the role of a scientific supervisor as both a mentor and a strategic partner in the research process. A substantial part of the discussion was devoted to practical aspects of dissertation writing, including the formulation of conclusions and recommendations, structuring of content, adherence to academic integrity, and the distinctions between theoretical, practical, and legislative outcomes of legal research.

The event was moderated by Roman Radeyko, PhD in Law, Head of the UBA Scholars and Educators Section, and CEO of OnlineLawSchool. Thanks to his active moderation, the event adopted a dynamic and dialogical format, encouraging the exchange of ideas, experiences, and practical advice.

During the Q&A session, participants received in-depth commentary on topic selection, collaboration with academic advisors, development of legal arguments, logical structuring of the research, and alignment of conclusions with the initial research objectives.

The event garnered significant interest and reaffirmed the demand for ongoing academic dialogue within the legal community. The UBA Scholars and Educators Section thanks all participants for their engagement and meaningful contributions. It also plans to continue organizing similar initiatives aimed at supporting legal scholarship, fostering the academic community, and enhancing the quality of legal research in Ukraine.
