UBAHRI and the National School of Judges of Ukraine organized an event dedicated to the use of the eyeWitness to Atrocities app
On December 4, 2024, an online event organized by the Human Rights Institute of the Ukrainian Bar Association (UBAHRI), in collaboration with the National School of Judges of Ukraine and supported by the International Bar Association (IBA), was held. The event focused on the use of the eyeWitness to Atrocities app.
This app, developed by the IBA in 2015, is designed to document photo and video evidence of war crimes and human rights violations. Since February 2022, users of eyeWitness to Atrocities have collected over 50,000 digital pieces of evidence related to various crimes committed in Ukraine, including indiscriminate shelling of civilian infrastructure, destruction of healthcare facilities, and many other atrocities.
The app was presented by Carrie Bowker, Director of eyeWitness to Atrocities, and Dmytro Hladkyi, a lawyer and project coordinator in Ukraine. The webinar addressed critical issues concerning the app’s technical capabilities, such as metadata protection, verification of the authenticity of recordings, and ensuring user safety. Discussions also highlighted how data from the app could be utilized by national and international judicial bodies.
The event explored how these digital tools can enhance the efficiency of judicial proceedings in war crime cases.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the experts, particularly Carrie Bowker and Dmytro Hladkyi, for their professional contributions, as well as to the judges and staff of the National School of Judges of Ukraine who participated in the event. Your engagement and activity have made this event an essential platform for exchanging experiences among experts and legal professionals, promoting the more effective use of digital technologies in judicial practice.
