International organizations issue a joint statement on Russia's invasion and the importance of freedom of expression and information

Representatives of the United Nations, the African Commission of Human Rights, the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe issue a joint statement condemning Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine in violation of international law.

Given that during the war the right to freedom of speech and free access to information need special protection, the organizations called for:

1. Ensure the safety of journalists and media representatives currently working in high-risk conditions.

2. Take all possible measures to protect the media, media organizations and Internet infrastructure from attacks and hostile capture.

3. Russian Federation — to refrain from propaganda of war and national enmity.

4. In order to counter misinformation, promote access to a variety of verifiable sources of information, including access to free, independent and pluralistic media.

5. The Russian government — to end the creation of a state monopoly on information, which is a gross violation of Russia's international obligations.

6. Ensure transparency in social networks, equal and consistent application of policies to protect the rights of all users.
