The UBA welcomes the adoption by the European Parliament of a Resolution on human rights violations in the context of forced deportation of Ukrainian civilians to and forced adoption of Ukrainian children in Russia
On September 15, 2022, the European Parliament adopted a Resolution on human rights violations in the context of forced deportation of Ukrainian civilians to and forced adoption of Ukrainian children in Russia.
The document condemns the policy of forcible deportation of Ukrainian citizens carried out by the Russian aggressor in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. It is also noted that the forced resettlement and deportation of Ukrainian children, including from orphanages, to the Russian Federation and the territories occupied by Russia, their forced adoption by Russian families is a violation of Ukrainian and international law, in particular Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide and punishment for it.
The Resolution calls for establishment of a special tribunal to punish the crime of aggression against Ukraine and its people committed by the Russian Federation and supports the investigation initiated by the ICC prosecutor on alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Ukraine.
The European Parliament also calls on the Government of Ukraine to ratify the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in order to in order to facilitate the prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including forced deportations, and on all European countries to sign or ratify the UN International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances.
The Ukrainian Bar Association expresses its gratitude to the European colleagues for their support and emphasizes that it is necessary to ensure as soon as possible to bring to justice the perpetrators of war crimes in Ukraine as soon as possible, in particular the highest military leadership of Russia and the sponsors of war.
